John's Favorite Music
Growing up, I can't recall being a huge fan of music. I know I really enjoyed the Beatles Abbey Road ("Maxwell's Silver Hammer" in particular) and later on the theme from Ghostbusters (what kid didn't?), but it wasn't really until college that I became a big fan of music.
Today I like a large variety of music--almost every sort from classical to rock to foreign, though I detest country, bluegrass, and most rap.
Classic Rock
My favorite genre would have to be the music of the late 60's through late 70's, what we call "classic rock" these days. Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Stones, Led Zepplin... the musicians of the past sure knew how to put passion into their music.
Classical
I do enjoy well-performed classical music, as well as modern compositions by such artists as Vanessa-Mae. Despite being labeled a "made for TV group," the girls of Bond play a nice modern synthesis of classical music, too.
Independent
Every college town has at least a few independent bands worth a listen, and there are plenty of artists trying to make their big break that produce music that doesn't feel quite as tainted by commercialism or the digestion and regurgitation responsible for the pap on half the radio dial.
One of my personal favorite indy groups is the Minibosses, who play old-school Nintendo game music arrangements. The concept may not be new--there are plenty of other groups performing game themes--but the Minibosses are the best I've heard.
