Food can be a real passion, and one doesn't have to dine out simply to experience excellence in food.
Though I have always cooked--from homemade pizzas starting at age 8 or so to five-course meals today--it has really been the past few years in which I have developed my own passion for food. I have begun studying not just recipes but the hows and whys of cooking so as to successfully innovate and create.
I have two specialties: soups and breads. I feel fairly competent cooking meat and basic desserts if not anywhere near the level I'd like.
